How we research and rank
The credibility engine. A reproducible, spec-first method you can check line by line — and an honest statement of its limits.
Units we claim to have lab-tested: 0.We do not own a warehouse of machines and we do not run controlled tests. What we do instead is reproducible, cited, and — for a small-space buyer — more useful than a subjective "we tried it": we compile the published numbers that decide whether gear fits, and we do the math.
The fields we collect on every product
The core of Rack Ratio is the Spec Block— the same structured data on every product, so you can compare like with like. For each item we collect, from the manufacturer's own spec sheet or manual:
- In-use footprint— the floor area it occupies while you're using it.
- Folded / stored footprint— the number the whole category leaves out, and the one that decides whether a renter can own it. A rack that folds to 5″ of depth is a different product from one that doesn't fold at all.
- Ceiling height needed — pull-up bars, tall uprights and overhead presses all have a clearance the box never mentions.
- Install & renter type — freestanding, clamp, doorway, or wall-anchor (studs). We flag what a renter can actually install without a landlord conversation.
- Weight range / rated capacity— the working load, from the manufacturer's rating, not a guess.
- Noise & floor reality— computed guidance on what reaches the apartment below, based on whether loads are dropped or controlled, not a decibel number we didn't measure.
- Unit weight & price— mass matters for a third-floor walk-up; price renders live from Amazon, or reads "Check price" when we can't verify it.
Where a manufacturer does not publish a number, the field reads "Not published" — never a value we made up to fill the row.
How we score
The visible /10 score on each pick is a weighted judgment across four criteria that actually matter to a small-space buyer:
- Fit for small spaces— folded footprint, ceiling clearance, and how reversibly it installs. Weighted highest, because it's the reason you're here.
- Value — capability per dollar and per square foot, not just the sticker price.
- Install reversibility — how renter-friendly it is to put up and take down.
- Build & capacity — rated load, materials and stability from documented specs and aggregated owner reports.
The score is a judgment from documented research, not a lab measurement. We publish it so you can see the shape of our reasoning — not because a number is objective truth.
Where the numbers come from
Every dimension traces to a primary source: the manufacturer's spec page, the product manual, or a published standard (for example, residential floor live-load references when we discuss whether a floor can take the load). We name and link those sources on each page. Prices come exclusively from the live Amazon Product API and are stamped with the date they were pulled; if we can't verify a current price, we show "Check price" rather than a number that has gone stale.
What we can't tell you
We can't give you measured, side-by-side load times, belt-noise decibels, or long-term durability from a bench we've run for two years — because we haven't. When a question can only be answered by hands-on testing we don't have, we say so on the page instead of inventing an answer. If that's a dealbreaker, a publisher with a real lab is the right source, and we'll sometimes point you to one.
Corrections
Specs change and mistakes happen. If a number here is wrong, tell us on the contact page and we aim to correct it within 48 hours, noting any material change. Our full independence and correction policy is on the editorial policy page.
