How to Install a Folding Squat Rack
Two hours, two people, one stud finder. The sequence that separates a rack you trust from one you don't.

Installing a folding wall-mounted squat rack comes down to six steps: locate and mark the framing studs, decide the mounting height, drill pilot holes into the center of each stud, drive the supplied lag bolts, tighten to the manufacturer's specification, then load gradually and re-check. Plan on two hours and a second pair of hands — the uprights are heavy and have to be held plumb while you drill.
A folding rack is the best small-space strength purchase there is, and the install is the part that decides whether that's true for you. Nothing here is beyond a competent DIY-er, but none of it is optional either — a rack is one of very few things in a home that a person hangs their body weight and a loaded barbell from. Read your manual first; where anything below differs from the manufacturer's instructions, the manufacturer wins.
What you need before you start
- A stud finder — an electronic one, plus a way to confirm the edges of each stud.
- A drill with a bit sized to the manual's pilot-hole specification.
- A socket wrench or ratchet to suit the supplied lag bolts. Don't drive lags with an impact driver at full power.
- A level — a long spirit level or a laser. A rack that isn't plumb won't fold cleanly.
- A tape measure and pencil, and painter's tape to mark the wall without denting it.
- A helper. Holding an upright square while drilling is a two-person job.
- The hardware in the box — use the supplied bolts unless the manual says otherwise.
The install, step by step
- Locate the studs and mark them.Run the stud finder horizontally across the wall at chest height and mark both edges of each stud, then mark the center between them. Confirm with a second pass at a different height — studs should line up vertically. If they don't, or the readings are inconsistent, stop and investigate; you may be reading pipes, conduit or a poorly framed wall. Run a strip of painter's tape down each stud center so you have a visible vertical line to work to.
- Decide the mounting height.This is the step people rush and regret. Set the rack so the J-hook range covers your unracking height for both squats and presses, so the pull-up bar clears your ceiling and your head, and so the folded unit doesn't block a door, window or light switch. Dry-fit an upright against the wall and hold it in position before committing to a single hole.
- Mark the hole positions. With the upright held plumb against your stud line, transfer every mounting hole to the wall. Check the marks are on your stud centers, not drifting toward an edge — a bolt near the edge of a stud has a fraction of the holding power of one in the middle. Level the marks across both uprights before you drill anything.
- Drill the pilot holes.Use the bit size the manual specifies and drill straight and square to the wall, to the depth the lag requires. Too small a pilot risks splitting the stud; too large and the threads lose their bite. If a bit suddenly goes soft after passing the drywall, you've missed the stud — stop, patch, re-locate.
- Drive the lag bolts.Start every bolt by hand a few turns before wrenching, so nothing cross-threads. Bring all bolts up snug in a spread pattern rather than fully tightening one at a time, keeping the upright plumb as you go. Include any washers supplied — they spread the clamping force and they're not decoration.
- Tighten to specification, then verify the fold.Torque to the manufacturer's stated value if one is given; if not, snug firmly without crushing the bracket into the drywall. Then fold the rack out and back several times unloaded. It should swing freely and sit flat. Binding means something isn't plumb — fix it now, not later.
- Test-load it gradually. Hang from the pull-up bar. Rack an empty bar in the J-hooks and lean on it. Then build up over your first few sessions rather than loading a working set on day one, watching for movement at the brackets or fresh drywall cracking. Go back and re-check every bolt after the first week.
Common mistakes
- Anchoring into drywall. The single most dangerous shortcut. If a mounting hole lands off-stud, move the rack or add blocking — never fill the gap with a drywall anchor.
- Setting the height by eye. A rack mounted too high makes unracking a squat awkward; too low and the pull-up bar is unusable. Dry-fit first.
- Skipping mounting holes. Every hole in the bracket is part of the load path. Using four of six bolts because two were awkward changes the engineering.
- Over-driving with an impact driver. Lag bolts snapped or spun out in soft framing are hard to remedy. Hand-finish with a wrench so you can feel the bolt seat.
- Ignoring what's behind the wall.Bathrooms, kitchens and utility walls carry pipes and wiring. If in any doubt about a wall's contents, choose a different wall.
- Forgetting the floor. The rack is mounted; the plates still land on your floor. Mats go down before the first session — our flooring guide covers the options.
If your studs aren't where you need them
You have three legitimate options and one illegitimate one. Move the rack so it lands on the studs you have — you rarely need it centered on a wall, and shifting it a foot costs you nothing. Add solid horizontal blocking between studs, which means opening the drywall and patching afterward but produces a genuine anchor surface. Or choose a freestanding rack and stop fighting the wall — the cages in our small-space power racks roundup need no anchoring at all. What we can't tell you
We can't see your wall. Stud spacing, framing condition, wall construction and what a previous owner hid behind the plaster all change the job, and none of it appears in a product listing. This guide reflects manufacturer install instructions and standard anchoring practice, not a test we ran. If anything about your wall is unclear — inconsistent stud readings, an unknown wall build-up, suspected pipes — get a contractor to look before you drill. It is a short conversation compared with the alternative.
