For most small-space racks, the SYL Fitness base is the pick, because it fits the 2 x 2 in uprights that budget compact racks actually use — the SELEWARE has a higher published rating but is sized for 3 x 3 in. Check your upright dimension with a tape measure before you order anything on this page. It is the only spec that can make a landmine unusable.
A landmine is a hinge. One end of a barbell drops into a swiveling socket bolted to your rack; you pick up the other end and press, row, squat or rotate with it. That is the whole mechanism, and it costs about thirty-five dollars. What makes it worth a page on a small-space site is what the arc does to your ceiling clearance: because the bar travels diagonally rather than straight up, a landmine press finishes well below the height a standing barbell press needs.
In a basement, an attic, or any room where you already gave up on standing overhead press, a landmine gives the pattern back for the price of a takeout meal. It also solves the opposite problem — rooms too narrow for a wide bar path — because the working end of the bar stays in front of you rather than swinging across the room.
Match the attachment to your rack, first
There are two mounting standards in this category and they are not compatible. Compact and budget racks generally use 2 x 2 in square uprights; heavier commercial-style racks use 3 x 3 in. The SELEWARE below is a 3 x 3 in fitting. The SYL fits both. The BLUSLM clamps with adjustable U-bolts and also mounts to a wall, which is the option for a room with no rack in it at all.
Second check: your barbell sleeve. Most of these are sized around a 2-inch Olympic sleeve, which is what a standard Olympic bar has, including the 5 ft and 6 ft short bars. Only the SELEWARE explicitly states it also takes a 1-inch standard bar.

What a landmine actually adds to a small gym
Four movement patterns, none of which need extra floor:
- Landmine press. A vertical-ish push on an arc. In a low room this is the overhead press substitute, and it is kinder to shoulders that dislike a strict overhead path.
- T-bar row. A heavy horizontal pull with the load in front of you rather than hanging under you. In a room with no cable machine, this is the closest you get to a seated row.
- Landmine squat / goblet variations. The bar helps counterbalance you, which lets a lot of people squat deeper than they can unloaded.
- Rotational work. The swivel is the point — half-kneeling rotations and landmine twists are hard to load any other way at home.
All four use a barbell and plates you already own. That is the argument: it is the cheapest meaningful expansion of a small gym's movement library, and it stores in a drawer when it comes off the rack.
The no-rack workaround, and its honest limits
If you have no rack — a bench, a bar and plates in a bedroom — the BLUSLM mounts to a wall with expansion screws instead. That works, and it is genuinely the only option here for a rack-free room. Two caveats. It means drilling, which rules it out for many renters. And no load rating is published for it, unlike the other two, so treat it conservatively.
The alternative that requires nothing at all: wedge the bar end into a corner with a folded towel to protect the wall. It works, it is what people did before these existed, and it is harder on your paintwork than on your training. If you are renting and cannot drill, our renter-friendly gym guide covers more of these no-anchor workarounds.
What to check before you buy
- Upright dimension. Measure the square tube on your rack. 2 x 2 in and 3 x 3 in are the two sizes, and they are not interchangeable.
- Hole size and spacing. The SELEWARE specifies 5/8 in or 1 in holes. If your rack uses a different pin diameter, the bolt will not seat.
- Bar sleeve diameter. 2 in Olympic is standard; a 1 in standard bar needs the SELEWARE.
- Sleeve protection. The SYL and BLUSLM both include an internal liner. Bare steel-on-steel will mark a bar end over time — cosmetic, not structural, but worth knowing.
Where a landmine does not help
It is not a substitute for catch bars. A landmine press cannot pin you, but it also cannot catch a failed squat, and nothing about owning one changes the safety case for a rack. If you are training alone and going heavy, read power rack vs squat stand first — that decision matters far more than this one.
It also does not replace a cable machine. Landmine rows are excellent; landmine pulldowns do not exist. If overhead pulling is what your program needs, see our compact cable machine roundup.
How we picked
We don't run a testing lab
We compiled published specifications, manufacturer documentation and aggregated owner reviews, then scored each product against a published rubric that weights fit-for-small-space, value, install reversibility and build. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are notmeasurements we took, because we don't have a lab and we're not going to pretend we do. Every dimension is cited in Sources.
Questions
Frequently asked
Do I need a rack to use a landmine attachment?+
For two of the three here, yes — they clamp to a square rack upright. The BLUSLM is the exception: it also mounts to a wall with expansion screws, which makes it usable in a room with a bench and a bar but no rack. If you can neither drill nor mount to a rack, wedging the bar end into a padded corner is the free workaround people used before landmine bases existed.
Will a landmine attachment fit my squat rack?+
Measure the square tube first. Compact and budget racks are usually 2 x 2 inches; heavier racks are 3 x 3. The SYL fits both, the SELEWARE is a 3 x 3 fitting, and the BLUSLM clamps with adjustable U-bolts that span a range. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a landmine gets returned.
Can you do overhead press with a landmine in a low-ceiling room?+
Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to own one. The bar travels on an arc that finishes in front of your head rather than above it, so a landmine press clears ceilings that a strict standing barbell press does not. It is not an identical lift — the resistance angle differs — but it trains the same pattern in a room that otherwise could not.
How much weight can you load on a landmine?+
The attachments here publish 600 lb (SELEWARE) and 500 lb (SYL); the BLUSLM does not publish a rating. Those numbers are far beyond realistic home landmine loads, so in practice your barbell's sleeve length and your own strength are the limits, not the base. Load conservatively on any attachment without a published figure.
